Leg Exercises

Posted by Alan Jenkin on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, In : running
As runners, we are inclined to believe that running gives us all the exercise we need.  However, I find that working out with dumbbells helps me maintain upper body strength - when I remember to do it!  Adding leg exercises to my dumbbell workouts not only gives more variety, it also helps build stronger legs for running.

I just found this video from Runner's World, which shows one of the exercises I have been doing lately.  I find that it has really worked for me, especially for my long runs....

How to Run Faster – Tempo Runs

Posted by Alan Jenkin on Friday, December 11, 2009, In : running

I just finished my first tempo run workout since I started the “run faster” program. The idea behind this program is to increase stride rate, or turnover. So today, instead of working on running pace in the intervals I worked on turnover.

I ran the first 10 minutes as a warmup at an easy, comfortable pace and stride rate. Then I cut into a 5 minute interval running at a comfortably fast stride rate. I followed this with 5 minutes running at the fastest stride rate I could manage.

The ...

How to Run Faster - Part 4

Posted by Alan Jenkin on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, In : training, running

Last week I was suffering from allergies, so between that and the Thanksgiving Holiday I found myself not running from Tuesday until Saturday. I got back to an easy run Saturday, and really enjoyed a long run on Sunday. Today, I did another PACE run as part of my speed training.

On the long run, I found I started off for the warmup with my old slow loping pace. After 10 minutes, I was fully warmed up, but found it was too difficult to adjust to a fast turnover, so I kept a slow stride rat...

How to Run Faster - Part 2

Running the 5K in the Huntsville Half Marathon - Oct 17, 2009

I'm writing this after my first run using the running tips mentioned in the previous article to help me run faster. To refresh your memory, the initial objective is to increase stride rate until it's 90 strides per minute or better. (For clarity, one stride is from point of contact of one foot to the next point of contact of the same foot, so a stride rate of 90 means that your left foot hits the ground 90 times in one minute.)

Posted by Alan Jenkin on Sunday, September 6, 2009, In : Cheap Travel

If you're still training for your half marathon, it might seem a bit early to ask the question: "What will you do afterward?"  Your half marathon training schedule has been keeping you busy until now.  How about some Caribbean travel when the race is over?

The best thing you can do for your body, if you can, is to take a relaxing vacation.  And it just happens that, with low air fares, there is cheap travel open for the rest of this year.  How would you like a vacation on a Caribbean Island?

Why Half Training Schedule?

Capitol 10K in Austin, March 29, 2009

Thousands of people have asked me why I have a site called halftrainingschedule.com No, not thousands, a few hundred, maybe. Well, perhaps a few ...

(Actually, I'm almost sure someone asked me once.)

The answer is quite simple. I enjoy running, and wanted to create a site for others who might be interested in starting. I already had two sites (beginning-running.com and gettingstartedrunning.com), but neither one was what I wanted.

Searching for suita...

Pain in Running

Posted by Alan Jenkin on Sunday, February 15, 2009, In : injuries

Today would normally be my long run day but I'm injured again.  Actually, it's probably still, rather than again.  I ignored my pain in running for too long, and it caught up with me.

According to Runner's World, Dr. Jeffrey Brown (author of The Competitive Edge) says that over time every runner is going to get injured: it's a part of running.  It's important to keep perspective: my pulled hamstring is not like losing a job, for example.  Being chronologically gifted, though (read "old"!) I am...

Flexible Training Calendar Benefits

Posted by Alan Jenkin on Thursday, February 5, 2009, In : training, running

Today was beautiful -- cool, calm and bright sunshine.  I was due for interval workouts today, so I decided to substitute fartlek training rather than running set intervals.  The beauty of that is that I can just break into speed whenever I feel like it and I do not need to keep checking my watch.

I chose to make all my speed breaks downhill.  This has several benefits:
  1. It's easier, if you have hilly conditions like I do
  2. I can go faster in my training intervals
  3. I can concentrate on my form and pr...

A Christmas Day Run

Posted by Alan Jenkin on Friday, December 26, 2008, In : training, running
Yes -- I actually ran today.  Slowly, painfully: I'm still not ready to get back to my half training schedule.  Fortunately, I have plenty of time before the end of April, but unless I heal soon I'll be lucky to make it.  My main concern now is whether I'll be OK to run a 5K in a month's time.

I suppose I can always walk it, if need be, but somehow for a 5K that seems pretty pathetic.  If I had not committed to run with my daughter, I'd be inclined to scratch and just prepare for my 10K in Mar...

About Me

Alan Jenkin A runner, undistinguished but persevering, I am more concerned with keeping fit and healthy than with setting records (even PRs). So I plod on, enjoying the journey with not too much concern about the destination. But I must admit to getting excited when I run faster or longer than the previous time!
