I seem to have been too busy to keep up with the blog lately! Anyway, I have two major announcements, so here they are: - A new series on Nutrition Facts for Runners starts tomorrow in the Members' Newsletter Service. So if you're not yet a member - sign up now before you miss it!
- I have added a new page on Healthy Deals. This page is updated daily, so you'll need to check back regularly.
Nutrition Facts for Runners:In this series, we shall review the current state of knowledge of
what constitutes good nutrition for runners, especially those
in the early stages of a running program. Since new information is
coming to light almost daily, this topic will always be changing, and
we will provide references for further research and occasional
updated articles on the subject. As always, nothing we say here
should be construed as medical advice: only your doctor can give you
that, etc.
This will be a ground breaking series, with information drawn from a variety of sources and comments based on my personal experience. You won't want to miss it! Healthy Deals:This is a new service added today to give additional value to the site. It will be exciting to see what they have to offer - the first selection looks great! So today you have two simple tasks: - If you're not already a member, join our team of healthy runners now
- Remember to check our Healthy Deals daily.

Do you run for exercise or for weight loss?
If you are currently training for a race, the answer is most likely
neither one. But when you are not actually in training you might set
a weight loss goal: just don't attempt to train for a race and
lose weight at the same
time.
Actually, when we talk about weight loss we
really mean fat loss. I could stand to lose a little weight,
but it's really the fat around my belly that is the problem. As you
probably know, if I were to lose that and repla... Continue reading...

I have always been blessed with perfect knees.
Beautiful they're not, but they have always functioned perfectly. I
have seen other runners with their knees strapped and wondered
whether they should really be running, wondered whether they were
making their injury worse, and been thankful that I never had knee
pain.
Until today.
I had been a little “off color” for the last few
days, but today I felt well enough to run again. I decided I would
set the intention of a long, slow (LSD) ru... Continue reading...

One of the benefits of being a writer about running
is that occasionally I receive samples of running clothing to
try. Early in the summer, I was asked to test a pair of Opedix®
running tights. I selected the coolest tights they carry,
recognizing that it would probably be too hot to test them in the
summer in Texas.
With summer temperatures ranging from 85ºF
to 105ºF and high
humidity, I don't find running tights very comfortable. Even
shorts get wet with sweat very quickly under those c... Continue reading...

I just spent a week in California. Most of the time I didn't run, but one day I ran along the trail in Ventura. The weather was perfect and the trail was flat -- I felt like I should really be running fast! Wrong. I missed the hills! I did not realize until I started running here again that the hills give me a chance to relax a bit on the downgrade. When it's flat all the time, there is no relief except by slowing down. Similarly, I don't get the chance to really work at it without speedin... Continue reading...

If you're still training for your half marathon, it might seem a bit early to ask the question: "What will you do afterward?" Your half marathon training schedule has been keeping you busy until now. How about some Caribbean travel when the race is over? The best thing you can do for your body, if you can, is to take a relaxing vacation. And it just happens that, with low air fares, there is cheap travel open for the rest of this year. How would you like a vacation on a Caribbean Island? If... Continue reading...

I just found out the secret to pain free running!
You might find it hard to believe that after all the years I've been
running it took me this long to find it, but it's true. Once you
know it, the secret is really quite simple: I'll write about in
detail in my next members' newsletter, so if you're interested in
pain free running this would be a great time to register (at
no cost). I promise I won't spam you or sell your e-mail address!
Meanwhile, there is other exciting news. They say ... Continue reading...

Now that I'm back to running again, I find that I can
jog along quite happily and comfortably, but I'm REALLY slow! That's
OK, except that I'd like to enter for another race (maybe a 5K this
time), so I need to learn to run faster. This means working
some other types of runs into my program.
You may already know about pace runs, intervals, tempo
runs and so on, but do you know how to enjoy them, rather than
looking on them as punishment? I'll describe what works for me: you
are free to a... Continue reading...

About Me
| Alan Jenkin |
| Huntsville, Tx |
A runner, undistinguished but persevering, I am more concerned with keeping fit and healthy than with setting records (even PRs).
So I plod on, enjoying the journey with not too much concern about the destination. But I must admit to getting excited when I run faster or longer than the previous time!
