At the bigger races of 10K or more they have massage
tents after the finish, usually free. This was certainly true at the
Capitol 10K last Sunday. I believe in taking advantage of them, as a
good massage, especially for the legs, helps to relieve soreness and
stiffness after the run.
Waiting in line for the massage, I got to talking to
another runner. When discussing half marathons, he came up
with some useful tips for race day and the period immediately
before and after. I thought you ... Continue reading ...

accidents
If you run on the roads, what do you need
to do to avoid running accidents?
I just got back from a 6 mile training run
and noticed that, despite the recession, the traffic seems to keep
increasing. I am aware of two fatal accidents to runners in the past
year, caused by vehicles whose drivers evidently did not see the
runners until too late. The most dangerous time to run is when the
light is just changing (at twilight) to or from dark: this is the
time when it is most difficult for a dri... Continue reading ...

I came across this post and decided the advice is good enough to share with everybody. It refers to a race in South Africa, so the details need to be changed, but the ideas are good anywhere! Norrie's final training tip for the Postnet Half-Marathon

stretching

Runners get injured. How quickly we recover from
injuries depends largely on how we rehabilitate the injury. You may
already be familiar with the immediate process: RICE (Rest, Ice,
Compression, Elevation).
But what about stretching? Should you stretch
an injured muscle? If so, why, when and how?
Why stretching after an injury is necessary
The main reason we get injured is through over-training, but
over-training in itself will not generally damage a muscle. When a
muscle is injured, i... Continue reading ...

contribution

I have previously contributed to Kiva, but recently found out they
have a lending team called Runners Who Love to Lend. In deciding how
to link Half Training Schedule with Kiva, I discovered this team. I
have now arranged that a portion of every sale from the Half Training
Schedule site will go to Kiva.
First, let me explain a little about Kiva: their mission is to
connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating
poverty.
Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending... Continue reading ...

About Me
| Alan Jenkin |
| Huntsville, Tx |
A runner, undistinguished but persevering, I am more concerned with keeping fit and healthy than with setting records (even PRs).
So I plod on, enjoying the journey with not too much concern about the destination. But I must admit to getting excited when I run faster or longer than the previous time!
